Tatra Ahimsa-Satya-Asteya-Brahmacarya-Aparigraha-Yamah 1.30
Tatra, there
Ahimsa, non-violence
Satya, truthfulness
Asteya, non-stealing
Brahmacarya, continence
Aparigraha, non-collection, non-hoarding (are called Yamas)
Regarding the first Yama, Ahimsa
Of these, non-violence, non-killing, abstinence from injury, means abstinence from ill will toward all living beings in every way and at all times. It is the foundation of all other abstentions and observances. Insofar as one’s aim is perfection of ahimsa, non-violence and abstinence, one is meant to achieve it. As a student undertakes many a vow of restraint and observance, his mind turns away from evils and sins committed, willingly or unwillingly, and by so doing his mind becomes pure and purer and he becomes able to change his personality to a higher level.
